I also recommend some hikes with views like Fremont Older, Sierra Vista, and Windy Hill Open Space Preserves. I recommend hikes by the bay at Shoreline Park and Alviso Marina County Park. The valley is surrounded by mountains and the San Francisco Bay and there are great hikes in every direction. There is also a growing brewery scene and numerous wineries close by. You could stay for a week and eat a different cuisine for every meal. It has large Hispanic, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and Vietnamese populations. This area is known for its variety when it comes to food. Also, the smaller downtowns of Sunnyvale, Saratoga, Los Gatos, and Mountain View have good restaurant scenes. It has stairways that go nowhere and a sprawling floor plan as the owner was told that she would not die as long as there was the sound of hammers in her house. We can’t talk about visiting San Jose without at least mentioning the quirky and spooky Winchester Mystery House. Other museums of note in the area are the Rosicrucian Museum of Egyptology and the Computer History Museum. We start in downtown San Jose which has some live theatre options, and two of the best museums in the area: the Tech Interactive Museum and the Children’s Discovery Museum. Many people, especially fans of high tech or those who work in high tech already are traveling to Silicon Valley. Our original group was fine and we all fit in rooms appropriately, adding more people was too much and too crowded and I have no idea why that happened. Also, on two separate occasions groups of 3 people were added to our tour (so an extra 6 people) with the limited space I wish that didn’t happen. On several occasions tours caught up to us and we caught up to others and the guides were talking to each specific group but it became a little too much hearing multiple tour guides. We did see some other guides walking around who looked bored or annoyed with the repetition of a tour but Sarah seemed excited and that was great! One thing that was a little frustrating was that tours are spaced out 5 minutes apart, I recommend changing that. Our tour guide Sarah was great very personable, sweet and knowledgeable. This is something my husband has been wanting to do and never got a chance so I decided to surprise him one weekend. Glad we could check it off during our recent trip to this area. Luckily, some of the rooms were beautifully furnished and classy, and the China and Cut-Glass serving pieces were amazing!Īll-in-all, we had put this place on our bucket list to see, after seeing the documentary about Sarah Winchester starring Helen Mirren.
How sad it must have been for a wealthy lady to be afraid to sleep in the same room on two consecutive nights, or use secret passageways to go from one room to another, depend on seances, and use a staircase maze just to go up 4 steps… We enjoyed the tour of the Mansion, and our guide regaled us with lots of stories about the eccentric owner. Also, the Number 13 is featured everywhere – from number of bathrooms and holes in the sinks, to hooks in closets. So, the place was built with stairs that ended up in roofs, doors that led nowhere, other than to sheer drops either in the garden or in a kitchen sink, chimneys with no outlets, and other doors that opened right into walls.

The 24.000 square foot sprawling Mansion with 160 rooms is gorgeous with its 10,000 windows and superbly landscaped Garden, but was built with no pre-made plans, no blueprints, and no architectural vision.Īpparently, the wealthy heiress of the Winchester Fortune lived here in constant fear of ghosts, and with advice from a psychic kept building randomly to appease the spirits. This was the most unusual and bizarre Mansion that we have ever visited.
